Formidable Females – Women in Business – Your Stories

Cedar Hall Clinic

Today we have Sara a fellow Essex girl who runs a successful business in Essex (http://www.cedarhallclinic.co.uk/) over to Sara…..

I left school with good “A” level results and a burning ambition to be an Osteopath. As a young gymnast/baton twirler (yes that’s what I said – baton twirler!) I had suffered many injuries during my career and had often used the services of my local osteopath, and had come to appreciate just how good osteopathy was as an alternative to the endless pain killers handed out by my GP. My osteopath kept me pain free and able to compete at the highest level. I represented England at both solo and team level and the training could be tough going on my back, knees and neck at times.

At the time I began my degree in Osteopathy, there were no student grants available, so that meant I had to fund myself. A huge hurdle but one that I was determined to overcome to reach my goal. So – thank goodness for Marks & Spencer! They gave me the opportunity to work there part time, earning enough money to fund my course at the London School of Osteopathy. I also worked a couple of days a week with my osteopath, learning my trade at the sharp end. He was an excellent teacher and I learned much from him.

I gained my BSc (Hons) Osteo degree in 1998 and after a few years working as an associated osteopath in a local clinic I decided to branch out on my own. Another big step, but for me it was a natural progression and the realisation of a dream. Sunnyside Osteopathic Centre (http://www.sunnysidecentre.co.uk/) in Grays came into being and I joined forces with a fellow osteopath and became a senior partner and co-owner. The clinic continues to flourish and I divide my time between Sunnyside and a newer venture.

Living in the Westcliff area I was also keen to own a more local clinic and a couple of years ago, I had the opportunity to launch the Cedar Hall Clinic in Hart Road, Thundersley – just 10 minutes from my home. There was much work to be done to shape this clinic into my ideal, but together with my fellow director Jacki Milne, I am proud of our achievements. My ambition had always been to run a community focussed business. Not only to promote osteopathy and sports injuries therapy but to also to be active within our community. I am most proud of the free treatments we are able to offer the parents of sick children in Little Havens Hospice; the free talks that we offer to local junior schools about bones etc; the free talk/coffee mornings we hold on occasion at Cedar Hall – the latest talk was about osteoporosis and our latest venture – awarding a complete treatment sponsorship to a young, elite athlete from Rochford, Georgia Atkins, who we hope to help achieve her dream of reaching the 2016 Olympics.

Getting married last year to Rob was another dream come true and although I’m 37 I still hope to have a family. But again I see this as a natural progression – baby can always come to the clinic with me!

What a fab story Sara and so great to see the work you do for Little Havens (http://www.havenshospices.org.uk/little_havens_care), not sure if a baby and a Clinic are that compatible! But i like your focus on being able to do both!

Coming tomorrow we have Michaela, a fellow mum who runs her own business from home!  Subscribe to the RSS feed so you don’t miss a post!
